Hello,

Can anyone help me in finding information on 19th century British silversmith Barret Henry Joseph. I am particularly interested in dates he worked and type of products he was specialized.
Thanks in advance

There is lots about him in:
The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths,
Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914
by John Culme, published by The Antique Collector's Club.
He and his brother (Henry) started in 1865 at 20 Frederick Street, Birmingham... Henry retired 1869 and was succeeded by his brother Joseph. BHJ&Co. opened a rretail shop at Ely House, Charterhouse St. in London in 1878.. by 1889 they employed 250 workmen... This important firm continued and became Payton, Pepper & Co. Ltd. in 1929

Thank you Silver Lyon, but sorry, I cannot well understand.
You say: "He and his brother (Henry)started in 1865" and then "Henry retired 1869 and was succeeded by his brother Joseph".
Who do you mean by "he"? Is Henry Joseph Barret one single person or is it Henry Barret and Joseph Barret? In which case "he" is: Joseph.
Pls clarify.
Thank you again for putting your time.
Best

I am always in a hurry, SORRY!
There are three brothers:
Barnet Henry Joseph -
Henry Joseph -
Joseph Joseph -

There is a piece on the firm in the 'Watchmaker Jeweller & Silversmith', Home & Colonial number, September 1899 which even has a picture of the firm's stockroom, factory and order department..

BHJ retired in 1903

JJ continued with their sons
JJ retired in 1912

The firm sent jewellery to the Calcutta International Exhibition in 1883 (and won a medal!!)

Hope this helps!

p/s there is a picture of JJ in the Watchmaker Jeweller & Silversmith, 1st August 1912 p.919. and another in INvention, 14th Auguat 1886 pp 1890/1.
Alas none of Barnet that I am aware of.

If it is the genealogy you are interested in, the sons are called
George L. Joseph
Percy Joseph
Leslie Joseph
although I don't know which one belonged to whom!!
