[01-2021] I am trying to research a brooch I have had for quite some time now but getting no where. I have had several people look at it and give me various dates but no real info can anyone help please. I have pictures I can send. It is a small brooch of 2 twisted serpents of silver and the pin is a viking ship that glides along its back with 2 large amethysts at the end of the serpents tails. The silver marks are a Fleur-de-lis a grouping of 3 castle turrets and a Scottish thistle. There are also the initials of H. W & S stamped on the back. Can anyone help please? Thank you IP: Logged |

I can't tell you who HW&S is, but I can tell you that your brooch is sterling silver and was assayed in Edinburgh in 1954. Phil IP: Logged |

Your pin is what is called a "penannular brooch" or just "annular brooch" and is part of traditional Celtic/Scots costume. The pin goes through the fabric and the body of the brooch is twisted to hold it in place. An internet search of the term "penannular brooch" will yield some very interesting examples, from antiquity to modern times. IP: Logged |
