[01-1922] Hi, I bought a brush at an auction. It has a tiny hallmark with initials JD and then 3 other tiny, really hard to make out symbols. The fist one looks like a lion?? the second in a shape of a shield has 3 tiny something and the third is a 3. Has anyone come accross similar marks if so what do the signify? Is is silver or silverplate? Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Silveraddict IP: Logged |

Just possibly it could be English silver with the Chester assay office mark (which is 3 wheatsheaves and a sword in a shield). Could the 3 be a letter? A picture is essential for accurate identification. If you cannot provide a photo then a scanned drawing might help. IP: Logged |

Thank you for your reply. The third mark is a letter R. Does that help? Again, thank you!!! IP: Logged |

Here are Chester hallmarks with the date letter R which might match your brush. 1900:

Hi PhilO, You have been extremely helpful. Based on your information I have been able to determined that 1 brush dates to 1900 and the other is 1905. I have one other question...What does it mean when it says "Sterling weighted". I have bought a couple of candle stick holders with that mark by Duchin Creations. Thanks again. IP: Logged |

I believe that "sterling weighted" means that the piece was made from thin sterling and then filled with pitch or plastic cement. There may also have been pieces of other metal put into the cavity and held in by the cement, for the purpose of giving the item a heavier feel. IP: Logged |
