In this Forum we discuss the silver of the United Kingdom, as well as British Colonial silver and Old Sheffield Plate. Past British - Irish Sterling topics/threads worth a look. |

I can't help you with the maker, but assuming that it is Birmingham (lion passant walking towards left and anchor), the small letter "t" was used for sterling in 1817/18, 1893/4, and 1918/9. If you can describe the shape of the shield punch in which the letter is set, it might be possible to get an exact date. If you have a digital camera, it is easy to post photos for free. See "How to post Photos" at the top of this web page. Good luck, IP: Logged |

Wow, thanks for the quick response! I don't have a digital camera... sorry. The shape of the shield that the letter 't' is punched in is (as I can best describe) a square with the two top corners slightly rounded, and bottom edge has 2 "humps" or a scallop with one point in the middle? Does that make any sense? I don't know how else to describe it! I'm new to this site, so thanks much for your help! IP: Logged |

Again, assuming it was made in Birmingham, that shield with the small "t" was used in 1918-19. You might try posting on the British/Irish Forum next time. Cheers, IP: Logged |

EJG is Ellis Jacob Greenberg. He entered 2 versions of his mark (EJG in a rectangular box and EJ over G in a shield) in 1906 and pieces with EJG on them were still being produced in the early 1930s so 1918 sounds like the correct date for your cigarette case. Greenberg also had silver assayed in London and Sheffield. Phil IP: Logged |

Thanks for everyone's help. I just visited a friend who has a digital camera, and took these photos. We couldn't get a good close up of the hallmark, but I posted the photos anyway, fyi. Thanks again from snowy Canada!
