[01-2305] Would anyone confirm or refute my suspicions here? In examining a Sheffield plate soup tureen, I found marks which appear similar to descriptions of Boulton and Fothergill marks from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Having never actually seen such marks (only poor illustrations), I cannot say with certainty whether these are or are not marks from those makers. One source describes the Boulton/Fothergill marks as "two eight-pointed stars". That appears to be exactly what I have here...
Here's a photograph of the entire piece:

Fine. A nice piece of Old Sheffield Plate. Just as you thought. But Matthew Boulton & Plate Co. went on well into the 1830s using these marks, so probably a little later than you were hoping. These marks were used on revival pieces at the turn of the c.19th/20th so you were right to be careful! - Look at the quality of those feet! IP: Logged |

Thanks for the reply, Lyon. You say, "probably a little later" than I was hoping: Actually, I understood that these marks were used on Sheffield plate from about 1785-1843, so I'm not disappointed at all. In fact, I'm a little thrilled about it, if in fact this is Boulton manufactured! I noticed, too, that there don't appear to be any maker's mark on the body of the piece, only on the lid... Is that typical? [This message has been edited by IJP (edited 05-13-2005).] IP: Logged |
