Hello Everyone I have been a member here for a long time but I seldom post because I have a 'very limited' knowledge of silver or silverplated ware. I Do find most of my questions answered by using the Search engine "But" this one has me stumped. I recently aquired a "BEAUTIFUL" Mappin & Webb tea (kettle/pot?) that the english call a spirit kettle/pot? My question: The only marks that I can find on this piece is the mappin&webb name. I say to myself .. "self", There is No Way that a company like mappin and webb would make this piece in sterling without marking it as such. Am I correct? Then again .. I have many pieces of silver plated ware and I can See the difference between them and true sterling! This kettle, in No Way looks like them. (plated) Okay, I know what is coming .. "Post A Picture Please" LOL At the risk of Great embarassment .. This is my very first computer. I have No Clue as how I can get a picture from my camera onto my computer? (The embarassing part?).. Until recently, I have always been on a Webtv. Thank You Everyone. Brenda P.S. As an after thought: This kettle/pot obtains that copper look as it tarnishes, Just like my (verified) 1840's James Dixon, Sheffield plated water kettle. Did Mappin and Webb do True sheffield plate? PPS: Ulysses Dietz has always been one of my [This message has been edited by brwvabell (edited 08-19-2006).] IP: Logged |

Hello Brenda, I am way outside my limited area of competence here but, what the heck.... As you already know your piece is plated because, as you said, something by Mappin and Webb would be hallmarked sterling if it was. Since Mappin and Webb orginated in Sheffield you could say any of their early plate was Sheffield plate (joke) but a piece marked Mappin and Webb would have to be electroplated, because George Webb joined the firm in 1858 and electroplating (a cheaper and easier process) took over c1840. Perhaps someone else could talk about spirit kettles. I can only remember 2 or 3 tea parties where silver tea services were actually used, all of them many years ago. Almost everyone I know used china or, as in my mother's case, stoneware. IP: Logged |
