I have a silent butler (handled crumb tray) that only has 4 marks. On the cover is a family "royal" crest with copper relief. The hallmarks are not deep, but lightly stamped in order from left to right:

  • C (shaped much like a British pound)
  • Crown w/facing rampant lions with a 3 tiered crown above them, some line between them.
  • An S, extremely close to that of the Birmingham 1841 British year mark.
  • What looks like a 5 point star
I can only really get the two middle hallmarks on camera:

The crest on the cover:

Any help identifying this would be appreciated greatly.

Best Regards,
Marc

Are you sure it's British? The crescent shape you describe sounds like the German mark post 1888.

Looks nothing like it. frown Looks like the British Pound symbol (Ł) without the - across it. Very strange that it can't be identified at all.

The marks of makers of electroplate during the 20th century are not well recorded, and there seem to have been lots of them. The coat of arms shown appears to be a decorative confection made up and stamped there during the manufacturing process. Thus, unfortunately, identifying your object is likely to be very problematical.

1900's? Strange... this is silver plated copper. From what I read over, Sheffield plate was dropped in the 1840's. Did companies start producing it again in the 1900's?

In a word - yes.
Also note that a period piece of Sheffield plate would have had a "rubbed in" piece of silver on which the coat of arms would have been engraved, so that the "bleeding" yours shows around the engraving would not occur.
