[01-2549] Hi: I'm not sure which forum to post this because I can't figure out if this is sterling, plate, 19th or 20th century pieces. Anyway, I thought the manufacturer was James Deakin & Sons. Since there is no lion mark does that mean it's not sterling? Also, any ideas as to age? Thanks for your help, Cyn

Functional ends are definitely electroplate. The ferrules could be sterling though. IP: Logged |

I'll take a stab at James Dixon and Son, silver plate, and a bugle trademark which apparently was granted in 1879. Late victorian seems possible, but I don't really know. IP: Logged |

Darn, I was hoping the manufacturer might have forgotten to mark these sterling. I just looped the fork tines and yes, there is wear to the silver. Thank you again for your help. I believe that it is James Deakin & Sons Sheffield silver plate as per this website: James Dixon & Sons Sheffield IP: Logged |

Mappin's EPNS marks book attributes that mark to James Deakin & Sons, 1871-1898, attributing a version with an added EP punch as 1890-?. The odd mark might be intended to evoke the Glasgow city mark -- this firm also used a crown, similar to the Sheffield mark, on some of their work. But that's just sheer speculation.... Nope -- I just found that mark in the back of Mappin under symbols, where it's clearly identified as a "gong" -- meaning a bell as used on a hotel counter to call someone. Just shows how the imgaination can run wild.... IP: Logged |

Mother of pearl cutlery began in the 1830's, per received wisdom. And continues today. The main limitation is the availability of large pieces of MOP, which means large shells. Lately I have run into very inexpensive sets with faux marble (like in bathtubs) handles. These have stainless settings and use an old LFC type cartouche. They are very striking, look really good. Besides MOP handles can be found in coral, jet, agate, gutta percha. Any one know of others? IP: Logged |
