Above is an interesting tea caddy spoon from Birmingham, England I found it in Atlanta this weekend. It has a date mark of 1817 and the sponsor's mark is JL. There is a John Linnit of London that has a mark that looks very similar to my eyes. Is it possible that Mr. Linnit had a Birmingham branch? I like the bright cut engraving on this spoon and find it interesting that it is on a spoon from 1817. I usually think of this style ending by 1800 or very shortly thereafter. I am not sure what the flower is on the bowl – maybe a rose? We had a great weekend in Atlanta celebrating a big birthday of my wife at an antique show. Her cousin and one of our daughters came for the party and we all shared a wonderful caramel cake baked by the cousin. Antiques shows make a great destination for a birthday party. IP: Logged |

What an attractive caddy spoon. That does look like a rose on the bowl. Happy birthday, Mrs. Ahwt! IP: Logged |

Thanks Polly, I will pass the happy birthday greetings on to Mrs. Ahwt, a.k.a. Carol. Her birthday is actually on the 15th, but since there is an antique show in Franklin Tennessee on the 21st it will extend at least till then. IP: Logged |

There is a JL mark on another caddy spoon marked for Birmingham 1814-1815 listed in the revised Jackson for a Lawrence & Co. Although the drawn mark does not look identical, is could be likely yours is from the same firm. IP: Logged |

The Birmingham Assay Office's Early Silver Hallmarks site lists this as John Lawrence, silversmith, of Frederick Street, Birmingham. Registration date is 21 April 1813. [This message has been edited by PhilO (edited 09-14-2012).] IP: Logged |
