[01-1379] After spending many, many hours with reference books, searching the Internet and seeking information from various online boards, I find myself now here. Can ANYONE give me ANY information on the following touch mark (hallmark) on the bottom of a sauce boat?
Thank you SO much for any assistance anyone can provice. I'm pulling my few remaining hairs out trying to find out WHO manufactured this item and it's approximate age. IP: Logged |

I believe it is a later mark of William Hutton & Son of Birmingham and later Sheffield, England. The company was founded in 1800 and became part of Dixon & Company in 1930. Someone with a better reference may be able to narrow the date range for you. IP: Logged |

(Moderator) Thank you for adding the additional photos. Didn't know if that was kosher to do or not. Unfortunately my photo isn't fully clear on the mark, but it is definately a "W" with a period "M" (no period) in the first oval. The last two, to me, are a "E" and a "P" - which I had assumed to indicate electroplate, but am now reconsidering that perhaps the "P" would be a date mark and the "E" perhaps a city/town mark? I'm not sure about the maker, but the EP does definitely stand for electroplate. IP: Logged |

If it is WM and not WH, then the maker is likely William Marples & Sons of Sheffield, and the piece probably dates to the 1880's or 90's. English silverplate like this tends to be very traditional in style, so it is difficult to date a piece by looks alone. It is defintely electroplate, so there is no need to worry yourself further about the EP. A nice piece! Brent IP: Logged |

Brent- Thank you for that information and for taking the time to answer. Looks like I've at least got a direction to head in. And yes, it's a wonderful little piece. Debating keeping it, but the wife goes bonkers when she finds how my "hoard" grows mysteriously. Again, thank you so much for the information! IP: Logged |
