The following are photos of an object in a leather holster made by William Summers, London 1874. For those those of you who want to guess what it is then don't look at the text following the photos. We are sharing and wondering if anyone can describe in detail how the holster works? Sterling Silver Saddle Flask & detachable cup with leather case made by William Summers London 1874 Sterling Saddle Flask & detachable cup with leather case by renown English silversmith William Summers of London, c. 1874. Initially he was a gold worker who later partnered with Charles Rawlings, moved to Marlboro St and began to specialize in small high quality sterling items. He was famous for magnificent craftsmanship and snuff boxes. This attention to fine details can be seen in precise design work like the brilliant lion and crown engraving on the side. The cup is engraved with the letters MEL in an attractive monogram. The flask stands 10 7/8" tall, 1 7/8" in diameter and weighs 302 grams or 9.7 ozs Troy. IP: Logged |

This is what a hunting gear dealer’s website says about the leather cases that contain hunting flasks: “They attach to the D rings at the front of the saddle and their broad strap passes under the saddle flap and attaches to the girth straps.” Apparently these cases are for use by men only; ladies carry a canteen that holds both a flask and a sandwich case.
