The first jug is in a modified traditional helmet shape with a Rococo Revival flair with engraved flowers, leaves and fruit sits on 4 ball feet. It was assayed in London in 1824. The maker is George Knight. The jug also has a crest? depicting 3 barrels? or bundles? of wheat? surrounded by a Greek key border with a buckle. Below this device is engraved "1824". Is there a way to search for such a device online? Any help would be appreciated.
The second cream jug is also assayed in London in 1799. The maker's mark is obscured/rubbed, though an "H" can be made out. Looking through makers of that period, I think, it could be Robert Hennell, William Holmes or Charles Hancock. Does anyone else have any thoughts or possibilities on how to narrow down the maker?
Thanks! IP: Logged |

I can tell you that the device in the first picture is the traditional form of a Scottish Clan badge. The three objects depicted within are tuns (whisky barrels). I went through an extensive but incomplete list of clan badges badges but did not find this one. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 02-23-2013).] IP: Logged |

Thanks Swarter. That is good info. I am having trouble posting the pics at the correct size, so I hopefully will have that sorted out. IP: Logged |

I cannot see the device which you are talking about in any of the pictures - has the relevant picture been inadvertently discarded? However a very useful resource for armorials is Fairbairn's Crests. Can I also throw HN (Henry Nutting or Hannah Northcote) - into the melting pot as a possibility for the second creamer. I know that maker's marks were frequently inverted with respect to the hallmark on flatware of the period - I'm not sure whether this might also have happened on holloware. Thanks Philo. Yes, the picture was deleted as I was having trouble with sizing with my hosting set, but I have restored the image. Thank you for your thoughts about both creamers. I really appreciate it and will give that reference a look. Kelly IP: Logged |

Hi everyone, I have been trying to track down the crest badge/coat of arms of the 1824 George Knight cream jug. Working with a friend in England, we are now pretty sure the crest is not Scottish, but could possibly be the crest of the Company of Vintners in London. I have written to the Vintners to see maybe if they have any records of ordering a cream jug or since there is a G monogram on the creamer as well it might have been ordered by one of their members. Thanks, Kelly IP: Logged |

Hello again everyone. I heard back from the archivist of The Company of Vintners in London and he believes the coat of arms on my cream jug is indeed that of The Vintners. He plans to feature the jug in their newsletter to see if there is any further info regarding the creamer. Kelly IP: Logged |
