My wife found this silver needle case in Kansas City recently. The dealer had the year identified as 1842 and attributed the sponsor to George Cowles. The sponsor’s mark looks closer to me to be George Cowie. The Gothic letters have never been easy for me to identify, but the letter for 1842 does look close. Does anyone have a better identification? IP: Logged |

I agree that this appears to be George Cowie's mark (entered 4th Dec 1838) and that the date letter is the G of 1842/43. However this is a lancet case, not a needle case. Phil IP: Logged |

I believe PhilO is correct about this being a case for lancets. Someone might refer to the above case as an Etui. But an Etui is configured to hold other articles as well; for example needles, toilet articles, tweezers, etc. When an Etui includes a lancet then it may be called a surgeon's/doctor's kit. Physicians who made house calls carried these pocket kits. A lancet or thumb lancet was used for Blood Letting. There were other more mechanical lancets, see Whatzit ([26-1408 01-2648]) The cases below are for thumb lancets. They are called thumb lancets due the manner in which they were held and pushed into a blood vessel.

Thanks PhilO and Scott for the interesting information. I know I saw the previous thread, but it obviously slipped my mind. My wife will find this information fascinating and will be on the lookout for some lancets. Something like this should have been included in the hands of Camille from the book Sharp Objects.
