Hello all

For your consideration, a London assayed silver spoon. The marks from the Assay Office are nice and crisp, the maker's mark less so! Any thoughts? My best guess would be William Bateman II, due to the odd shape of the "W" - specifically how it goes to the right (inwards) on the top of the "W" on the left hand side.

Cheers

I agree with your attribution to William Bateman. However you should not rely too much on individual letter shapes - Bateman used several punches during his career, not all the same, although the overall punch shape remained pretty constant. I think that I can detect a slight incurving on the left hand side of the punch which makes me think it's Bateman.

Cheers Phil. Yes, there is a slight inward curve on the left hand side of the maker's mark, but not as obvious as some of the maker's marks I have seen.

Welcome back. I assume that the sponsor mark was put on by someone that worked for Bateman.
Were all the assay marks put on by the same hand at that office?

The actual hallmarks were put in on a stub (all together) I believe they were squeezed in by a screw press.
