[01-3266] What do you call this style of bowl and what would it have been used for? It is about 5.5" wide and 3.5" tall. Is English and dates to around 1800.

I thought the general forum was appropriate since I was asking about the style. I know who made it - The Batemans. IP: Logged |

It's about sharing. We like seeing the object and for any silverphile the marks are essential part of seeing the object. IP: Logged |

Could it be a waste bowl (slop bowl), part of a tea set? IP: Logged |

Thank you for the suggestion that it could be a tea set waste bowl. I was unfamiliar with that term and looked it up and see that it was a common part of the set back in the day. I guess my question was more related to the "twist" look of the bowl. Was curious if that had a particular term used to describe it. IP: Logged |

I would call the decoration a swirling fluted pattern. To me it evokes the lapping of waves in the ocean against a rocky ledge. The fluted portion on the bottom is more common than the top portion decoration, but the top decoration finishes the feeling of a lapping action. A very attractive bowl and if it originally came from a tea set I would like to see that set. That design has a lot of energy in it and it would be interesting to know the date it was made. Thank you for your description - swirling fluted pattern sounds apropos and I can see what you mean about waves. The bowl is dated 1802. IP: Logged |

Bowl is not with me now - at another property 1,200 miles away. Will add pic of marks when able -- but won't be for a few months... IP: Logged |
