I purchased this small teapot and am wondering what the handle might be made out of. It is a smooth brown material that almost feels like plastic. The piece was made in 1931 by Adie Brothers, Birmingham. The handle is also a little loose or "jiggly". Is there a way to tighten it up? Is it wood? If not, maybe bakelite? IP: Logged |

I think you're right in that it is probably bakelite. It has a subtle wavy design giving the impression of dense wood - but it's not wood. Being fairly new to collecting I was unaware that bakelite could have textured appearing patterns - but that makes sense seeing as different colors can be mixed in to create visual effect. Thank you for the help. IP: Logged |

This article onBakelite is interesting as it notes different methods for identification testing of items suspected of being Bakelite. Bakelite appears to be very desirable in antique jewelry and it develops an attractive patina over the years. There are most likely ways to tighten the handle, but I would take it to a professional for this. It may be that jewelers and silversmiths may both be experienced in repairs of this kind.
