I had the opportunity to handle some very nice dog nose & trefid spoons yesterday. They appeared to be authentic dating from the mid to late 1600's - very early. They were in a collection from a prominent estate. How rare are they? Are they something that gets collectors hearts beating?? Are there some that are considered more highly collectible than others ?

They are moderately scarce. I have never owned one yet, but online they are readily available. I am picky so I will wait for the right example. IP: Logged |

I assume those were not American in origin. If they were, you should have grabbed them. IP: Logged |

Many things are talked about as being rare, but I think these spoons, particularly American ones really are rare. I really do not ever recall seeing an American one for sale. IP: Logged |

Given the "Rememb.r" on the reverse, I believe this to be a memento mori spoon and therefore rarer than a typical DOGNOSE. Although the 2 middle marks are very faint, I was able to read them as Thos. Sadler, London, 1703-4. IP: Logged |
