I recently purchased the Barnard & Sons ewer shown below from an auction that listed it as simply "silver." The marks shown in the auction photos looked like English sterling to me. It's marked several places with the lion passant but the marks on the base include a lozenge that I've perhaps erroneously associated with silverplate. Is the British lozenge mark simply a form of patent mark used on metals 1842-1883? In this case sterling made in 1876 of a design registered November 29, 1854? Thanks, Scott. It appears the registry did not distinguish between types of metal. [This message has been edited by Silverpath (edited 03-23-2021).] IP: Logged |

The Register marks has an upper section for the material used. The number One seems to be a catch all that would include silver. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 03-24-2021).] IP: Logged |

Some interesting information about this company. Edward Barnard and Sons Edward Barnard and Sons was a firm of British silversmiths. They created the Lily font, a large silver gilt baptismal font used in the christening services of members of the British Royal family. The company's origins date back to about 1680, when the silversmith Anthony Nelme (d. 1722) established a firm in Ave Maria Lane, London.[1] Edward Barnard (d. 1855) was first manager and in 1829 became the proprietor, trading as Edward Barnard & Sons, with his sons Edward Barnard (d. 1868), John Barnard and William Barnard (d. 1851).[1] In 1838, they moved to Angel Street, London.[1] The Lily font was commissioned by Queen Victoria from Edward Barnard and Sons, for the christening of her first child, Victoria, Princess Royal on 10 February 1840, her parents' first wedding anniversary.[2][3] In 1898, they moved to Fetter Lane, and in 1920, to Hatton Garden, London. In 1977, they became a subsidiary of Padgett & Braham, and closed in 2003.[1] IP: Logged |

Useful link, thanks. I finally found the meaning of the "bundle number" which is "unimportant to most collectors." It is how many items were included in the registration, so not important at all. The rest of the lozenge has a lot of detail. I haven't owned a piece with the lozenge mark before. IP: Logged |
