Above are some horn cups with silver rims. Two have the makers marks of IP and the largest one is unmarked. The latter one is silver over copper while the other two appear to be solid silver of unknown purity. I put these cups in the British section as all recorded American marks with an IP have a period included with the mark. There are several British silversmiths that are simply the initials IP with no periods. James Phipps I, Joseph Preedy, John Priestman, John Pritchard, John Page, and John Phillips of London all used IP as their mark. Of course, they could be from some other country. Given the wear on them I do think they have quite a bit of age. The two marked cups have a very interesting construction as the silver smith lined the bone cup with silver and sized the insert by having what appeared to be an adjustable seam running the height of the cup. The cup with silver over copper rim does not appear to be Old Sheffield Plate so it should be after 1840. Any ideas about the origin of these cups would be appreciated. IP: Logged |

They are very good looking. I haven't any idea about the maker or origin. If they were mine, I'd use them on special occasions. If you are thinking about using them I would suggest that you test the seams for lead. IP: Logged |
